The Harley Davidson Fatboy

There are these motorcycle engines made by Harley Davidson going by the name of Harley Davidson's Twin Cam engines which were made around the year 1998. This engine was actually quite different when taken into comparison with the Evolution engine. The Evolution engine was actually derived from a continuous loop of a single camshaft and overhead valve motors which were all released in the year 1936. These engines seem to share a lot of similarities with almost all the previous Harley Davidson engines

The Harley Davidson Fatboy and the later engine seem to have two cylinders which are in a V-twin configuration which is placed at an angle of 45 degrees. The Harley Davidson Fatboy along with the other engine are both air cooled and come with active valves which also have pushrods in them. When taken into consideration the camshaft they both have a single pin with a kind of arrangement which is similar to the knife and fork in the case of the connecting rods. All these seem to be sandwiched between a pair of flywheels.

The engine Twin Cam 88 was actually released for the particular model of Harley Davidson’s 1999 year model. This engine was released in the year of 1998 during the month of September. While considering the Twin Cam 96 engine, it was slightly different as it was released particularly for the Harley Davidson’ 2007 model motorcycles.

It is considered that the Harley Davidson Fatboy was primarily not used for the Softail model even before the year 2000. The main reason for this is that the chassis design of the bike and the vibration transfer, which runs to the Softail frame which actually happens due to the direct mounting of the engine. The Dyna models are usually rubber mounted. Due to this reason, the most of the vibration that happens with the vibration transfer to the frame and the rider is damped.

One other reason is that when considering the Harley Davidson Fatboy both the engine and the transmission are actually bolted together directly. This leads to the chassis, seat post on a Softail bike to interfere with the Transmission case of the engine. The company was in a discussion about the rubber mount being a hindrance and that it gets in the way of the line's visual styling. A solution to the problem occurred when Harley jumped in with a new design where the engine variant was different. The previous model engine was taken and it was modified with an engine block design which will allow the chain drive balance shafts to run smoothly.

These updated versions were all released into the market along the same time of the year for the 2007 model motorcycles. This was all equipped with the Softail models until the period where it was replaced by the 103 ci version. While this happens there is still a possibility where the regular Twin Cam motor can be mounted to a Softail which was released prior to 2000 with the help of third party adapters.
